Highlights
Adjoining the Nipmuck State Forest, Bigelow Hollow is part of one of the largest unbroken forests in Connecticut. On this hike, you'll learn about some of the most abundant Connecticut geologic features and hopefully run into a beaver or two (or at least their effects on the trail). Question for the hike: Do beavers usually fall trees toward the water? Come find out the answer!
Please consider the length and duration of the hike when considering bringing children along. Children as young as 8 have participated in the past, but you'll know best. These are educational hikes, but 2+ hours may be a little much for kids any younger.
Please bring: good hiking boots/shoes; water and snacks (we'll always have a food break); and the love of being outdoors. You might also consider packing along binoculars, camera, hiking poles, sunscreen, and bug spray.
We usually make a decision on the weather the morning of the hike because forecasts can be dubious at times. If uncertain, call cell phone (860) 508-9952 on the day of the hike.
Directions
From I-84 Eastbound, take Exit 73. Follow Route 190 east to Route 171. Turn right onto Route 171 and follow to the park entrance on your left (about 1.5 miles from Union). Follow the main park road 0.5 miles to the picnic area and trail parking at the north end of Bigelow Pond. You'll pass a small parking area reserved for anglers on your left before you reach your destination.
